Stephanie's Report

I feel this punishment will help SMRT to realize their mistakes for their lack of ability to do constant maintenance to ensure that such events like the twin breakdown which happened on December.
In the article, it stated that this unfortunate event was preventable. Since such events are avoidable, for SMRT part, they should practice vigilance and effective problem solving by perform more maintenance checks to not allow such breakdowns to happen again. On top of that, SMRT can organize more safety precautions exercise so that if such unfortunate events happens again, commuters are more prepared.
For the commuters part, let this be a learning point as they might be trapped in the transport for a period of time, therefore they should look after the safety of others. This is a lesson to learn for the commuters that are trapped in that accident, to practice consideration for their fellow Singaporeans.
In conclusion, the fines implemented to SMRT will serve as a reminder for SMRT to not treat the maintenance of the transportation vehicle lightly as it affects a lot of commuter as the MRT is one of the main transport system that Singaporeans take to get from places to places.

Atirah's Report

In my opinion, I think that the SMRT was fined due to their carelessness and ignorance in handling
major matters like this. This is important as it involves commuters, thousands of them daily. If the
train continue to fail to operate, the commuters are most likely to be affected. LTA has the right
to fine them as this continues for a second time. If LTA did not do anything to make it right, SMRT
would continue to be careless in handling such matters in the future.

As a student who takes the MRT train daily, I would not want such incident to happen to me every
day early in the morning to go to school. Fortunately, LTA and SMRT are working closely to fix the
twin breakdowns so as to address the issues and correct them to prevent the same problem form
happening in the future.

However, I also simply agree and support SMRT and LTA for donating the $2 million fine to the
Public Transport Fund to help needy families with transport fares.

Crystal's Report

I was not directly affected by the SMRT breakdown. However, that does not mean I have no opinions on it. Frankly, I think the amount of chaos from this incident could have been prevented. As the citizens of Singapore, we are repeatedly told to always be prepared for any circumstances. SMRT always carry out evacuation exercises, so why not do the say for let's say emergency train breakdowns? They state that there was fault in the train tracks. This alone makes me think that SMRT is not putting the money they earn to good use to perform thorough checks to ensure that we get the quality public transport that we paid for. I'm glad that they have been fined and this will be used to help the public but I can't help but shake the feeling that more can be done.

Stephanie's Report

After reading this article, I feel that the main problem lies with the communication between Singaporeans and students from China. And because of this, it separates and create a barrier between the Singaporeans and the students from China.
I feel that both the Singaporean and the Chinese student should keep an open mind about the way they feel about each other and kee any negative comments tothemselves With the increasing education standards in Singapore, Singaporeans have to expect more foriegn students coming to Singapore to study. Thus, interacting with them is inevitable. In my opinion,  since both party are studying together in the same environment, they should make the best out of it, and not discriminate anyone based on their nationality.

Chloe's Report

I myself feel that the article is very true,  where students from China are feeling very alienated by Singapore students. In society now, we can see the number of China citizens rising and Singaporeans are not happy with it. Becase it might mean lesser job opportunites for Singaporeans due to the many foreigners migrating to Singapore. Whenever we go around, we should have friends criticizing about China citizen’s accents and the way they do things, and about how they always seem to score good grades. Thus, this is mainly one of the reason why I feel that Singapore students are not in good terms and not communicating with the China students.

I personally feel this has got to stop because we should accept everybody as who they are. Singaporeans need to learn that having China students can be a benefit. As there will be an extra group of people to share ideas and opinions with.
